Nascimento shares 12-yard secret

nasci 060720Mamelodi Sundowns defender Ricardo Nascimento has shared his secret as the club’s number-one when it comes to scoring from 12 yards out.

Nascimento is Sundowns’ current designated penalty-taker and has been for the past four seasons, during which he has netted a total of 12 goals from the spot.

The Brazilian-born star has also yet to miss a penalty since arriving at the Tshwane giants, and this has been the reason why he remains the trusted figure when it comes to this particular situation.

The 33-year-old puts his impressive ability down to his courage, coupled with the faith placed upon him by coach Pitso Mosimane.

“My courage to kick penalties started at my previous club in Portugal, and here [at Sundowns] coach Pitso also trusts me and gives me the opportunity,” Nascimento told Downs’ website.

“Up to now, and thank God, I’ve never missed. My secret is to practise at training, and when the situation is real during the match I keep calm, relax, but the butterflies in my stomach are unavoidable.”

This weekend is also set to mark four years since the lanky centre-back joined The Brazilians on a free transfer from Portugal, and he has shared why he took the opportunity offered to him at Chloorkop.

“Yes, it’s now four years that I am playing for Mamelodi Sundowns, time does fly. I was playing in Portugal when I was approached by Sundowns to come and play here in South Africa,” he added.

“I was living in Europe and my decision was not easy, but I was impressed with South Africa at first sight, and then with Sundowns as a club, the team and its structure.”
